Ein Beitrag für die Psychologen unter den Lesern ...

Nun gut. Nach zwei Wochen Uni muss ich leider schon zugeben: ich habe die ganze Sache ziemlich unterschätzt. In einem Kurs werden aus vier Essays plötzlich 6 Essays, zusätzliche Leistungen (die nicht aufgelistet werden) in Form eines Research Proposals oder einer Research Presentation kommen hinzu und nebenbei wöchentlich ein Statistik-Script mit dem ich nur zu etwa 25% etwas anfangen kann...

Mein Wochenende habe ich damit verbracht, die Ethics Application zu schreiben (auch so eine Leistung, die nirgends aufgelistet wird...). Die Ethics Application ist ein Teil des Research Projects. Da wir leider nun mal mit Menschen arbeiten müssen und die nach bestimmten ethischen Richtlinien behandelt werden sollten, muss eine solche Ethics Application der jeweiligen Ethikkommission vorgelegt werden (diese Richtlinien werden hier vom NHREC festgelegt - falls sich hier jemand für die ethischen Richtlinien in Human Research in Australien interessieren sollte und es gern nachschlagen möchte...). Insgesamt beinhaltete die Ethics Application eine Consent Form (diese müssen die Versuchspersonen unterschreiben und somit geben sie ihre Einwillung zur Teilnahme am Experiment), ein Advertisment Sheet (dies dient zur Rekrutierung der Versuchspersonen), ein Plain Language Statement (beihaltet die Beschreibung des Experiments für die Versuchsperson VOR der Teilnahme am Experiment, i.d.R. eine Cover-Story, die die eigentlichen Hypothesen verdeckt), ein Debriefing (Beschreibung des Experiments NACH der Teilnahme. Ethisch richtig handelt man u.a. dann, wenn die Versuchspersonen über das eigentliche Ziel der Studie aufgeklärt werden). Dann eine Minimal Risk Application für die eigentliche Ethik-Kommission (ein 10-seitiges Dokument purer australischer Bürokratie...) sowie eine ausführliche Beschreibung über die Hypothesen, das Research Design, statistische Datenanalyse und eine bisherige Literaturzusammenfassung von 1500 Wörtern.
Ihr denkt euch sicherlich schon beim Lesen: boah...keine Lust mehr, wann kommen wieder Koalas?
Ja ... so ging es mir auch und ich war froh, als ich es Montag Abend alles abgeschickt hab.

Na dann hat es sich ja gelohnt und ich bin froh, wenn wir das morgen erstmal einreichen und wir mit dem experimentieren beginnen können.
Am Freitag habe ich auch schon meine ersten drei Versuchspersonen für die Pilottestung (das ist eine Art Probedurchlauf, um zu sehen, ob alles funktioniert...).

First Semester:

Avanced Design and Data Analysis (12,5 Credits)
(Assoc Prof Richard Bell) 
Inhalt: Multiple regression; logistic regression; an introduction to path analysis; multivariate analysis of variance and discriminant analysis; principal components analysis and factor analysis; models for multivariate categorical data; cluster analysis;multidimensional scaling and structural equation modelling
Prüfungsleistungen: A written report of no more than 2000 words (40%), and an examination of no more than two hours (60%).

Theories and Ethics in Psychology (12,5 Credits)
(Assoc Prof Robert Reeve)
Inhalt: The general aims of this subject are to provide a context for fourth-year students to develop an understanding of the origins and development of psychological thought, research and practice in relation to its socio-historical and ethical contexts. The focus is on the changing themes in the      history and philosophy of scientific and ethical thought, and on providing students with a framework for understanding and evaluating reasoning, argument and ethical decision-making in psychology.
Prüfungsleistungen:Four written assignments, one for the ethics component (1200 words, worth 35% of the overall assessment), one for the evidence based practice component (1200 words, worth 35% of the overall assessment, and two for the theory component (each of which is 800 words, and each of which is worth 15% of the overall assessment).

Research Project (25 Credits)
(Coordinator: Assoc Prof Stephen Bowden)

Inhalt: There are no scheduled classes for this subject. Instead students undertake a research project and obtain experience in all aspects of conducting and reporting of independent empirical research. The project itself is a maximum of 10 000 words in length and is submitted towards the end of the year. The research project constitutes 50% of the course. 
Prüfungsleistungen: Written thesis (10 000 words) and conference presentation by the end of the year

Second Semester:

Current Topics in Cognitive Psychology (12,5 Credits)
(Dr Jason Forte)
Inhalt:     In this subject key theoretical issues of contemporary interest in cognitive psychology are addressed. Relevant theoretical and empirical articles being    discussed and evaluated. Topics will be selected from the following: sensation and perception; theories of brain function; memory; consciousness, music & neuroimaging.
Prüfungsleistungen: Class presentation and a written work of no more than 3000 words.

Current Topics in Behavioral Neuroscience (12,5 Credits)
(Prof Michael Richard Nicholls)

Inhalt: The seminars in this series are designed to provide students with exposure to a wide range of topics and methods in contemporary behavioural neuroscience. Presentations will focus on the current research of staff or their research collaborators. Research topics may include the neurobiology of emotions, personality traits, psychopathology and adjustment disorders in community-based studies or clinical populations, asymmetries of brain function, and     modelling of cognition and cognitive deficits. 
Prüfungsleistungen: Class presentation, written work of no more than 3000 words and one two-hour examination (100%)

Research Project (25 Credits)


Sechs Kurse sehen gar nicht so viel aus... aber wie schon oft genug erwähnt: ich bin baff. Hinzu kommt auch noch, dass es zu jeder Vorlesung eine Übung gibt.
Aber es geht zum Glück nicht nur mir so und ich denke, dass es für die australischen Studenten noch eine größerer Umstellung ist.

Jetzt muss ich aber schlafen: mein Tag beginnt um 6.30Uhr, da ich meine Statistik Übung von letzter Woche noch nicht ganz geschafft habe. Um 9 Uhr gibts dann 2 Stunden multivariate Datenanalyse , danach 2 Stunden SPSS Lab, dann  eine Mittagspause und um drei Uhr mein Treffen mit meinem Supervisor.


Was habe ich mir am Anfang nochmal gesagt?
Ach ja...: kein Stress!
